Kappalady Kitegarden is located by the Kappalady lagoon, which is Sri Lanka's premier spot for kitesurfing in butter-flat water. The lagoon has big areas of knee-deep to waist-deep water perfectly suited for beginners, as well as areas of deep water for intermediate and advanced riders who want to boost big jumps or work on tricks.
Kappalady Kitegarden also organizes kitesurfing downwinder trips along the coastline for those who enjoy playing in waves, as well as trips to nearby islands with huge areas of flat water.
The peak season for kitesurfing is from the beginning of May through September. During this time the warm southwest monsoon winds funnel through the gap between Sri Lanka and India, resulting in one of the most stable and reliable wind systems on the planet. You have a greater than 90% probability of being able to enjoy kitesurfing and windsurfing on any given day, with winds typically ranging from 15 knots to 25 knots. The weather is usually sunny and dry during this season, with temperatures around 30-32°C during the day falling to around 28°C at night.
The second season for kitesurfing is from December through February, when the winds blow from the north/northwest. These winds are not as reliable as in the peak season, but you still have a good chance of being able to enjoy kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Dolphin-watching and whale-watching is best enjoyed from December through April, when hundreds of dolphins congregate to feed and play along the coast. Further out sperm whales can be spotted, but unlike the dolphins -- which you are guaranteed to see -- you need a bit of luck to see whales, but we can arrange experienced guides who will help bring you to the best spots.
Other nearby attractions include the historic Talawila Church and the Wilpattu National Park.
